How To Wrap A Silk Scarf On The Head

By Sean Goudeloc

A silk scarf is a popular accessory for women who want to preserve their hair style, decrease breakage and increase growth. Silk scarves are sold at a variety of beauty stores simply for the purpose of being wrapped on the head. The natural fibers in silk help promote hair growth and scalp health. In fact many African American women are known to have their hair wrapped with a silk scarf whenever they can. Wrapping a silk scarf properly is the most important detail for this technique to be effective.

For a Square Silk Scarf and Short Hair

A square silk scarf is best suited for women with hair that is less than shoulder length. To start, you will need to part your hair in the center using a rattail comb. Next, using a boars hair bristle brush, begin combing hair around the head. The boar’s hair brush will create the right tension and static electricity to hold the hair in place while you wrap it. It is also a good idea to use a leave in conditioner as you are brushing. The hair should be brushed in a circular pattern from the top of the forehead to the bottom of the scalp and back around the other side. Continue to brush your hair until it is all within the tight circle.

Next you will fold your silk scarf in half into a triangle. Place the long side of the triangle (the fabric crease) on your forehead and smooth the sides to the back. Tie in a know, fold down the remaining point of the triangle over the head and knot the bottom pieces again to secure it in place.

For a Long Silk Scarf and Long Hair

Long hair is a bit more of a challenge when it comes to wrapping a silk scarf on the head. First of all, you will need a long silk scarf to do this. Start by brushing your hair backwards with a boar’s hair bristle brush. Again, boar’s hair helps decrease frizz and create enough static to keep hair in place. You can also apply leave in conditioner or a styling crme at this point in time. Once you have finished brushing your hair to the back it will be time to wrap the scarf on your head. Center the scarf on top of your forehead and wrap the tails backwards. You will want to wrap them around the length of your hair to get the best effect. Next, twist the tails and the remaining fabric that is draped over your head upwards and tie into a knot. Your hair will be loosely in this knot. You may need to use bobby pins to secure your wrap in place.

This technique is useful for anyone who has undergone a straightening perm. It will help the treatment last longer and maintain smoothness while also protecting the hair while you sleep. Any high end silk scarf can be used for a hair wrap.
