Are You Expecting Too Much From Vitamin C?

Lauded as the master antioxidant and queen of vitamins, vitamin C has definitely been an indispensable part of the daily diet of every individual. Be it average people or those with medical condition ranging from mild to fatal, the benefits of this vitamin is said to counteract unrecognized processes and elements in the human body. It has absolutely played a big role that for some experts, exceeds its factual capacity.

From being touted to be the wonder nutrient of the century that gave Linus Pauling his Noble Price in Chemistry in 1954, vitamin is now so generic that almost every food, from potato snacks to moisturizing facial masks have this on their label. But despite the evidential importance, its health claim was rebuked at the advent of the new millennium. Some scientists believe that although it is a vital part of the human nutritional requirements, some of its so-called benefits are indeed far fetched and do not stand to expectations. Vitamin C’s power against viruses causing cold for instance is being put to scrutiny as its effects are said to be directly impotent at all. Instead of a direct ammo, they believe that the benefits come not from the direct assault this vitamin can do to viruses but to the fact that taking any kind of vitamin can boost resistance and immunity. Accordingly, its so-called wonders on the cellular level have been taking too much of the credit which may be dangerous to many people who believe that taking vitamins alone can give them health stability and worse, cure to illnesses.

Cancer for example can be counteracted by strengthening the cell membranes and eliminating toxins and free radicals using powerful antioxidants such as vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, this is just on a theoretical level and causes conflict among experts themselves. The belief of many people that this vitamin can cure even elicits new dangers resulting to megadosage. Based on the current standard of daily nutritional intake, ascorbic acid requires a mere 60 milligrams which can be completely absorbed from regular food serving a day. However, despite this fact, more people still take supplements to support their lifestyle which is not a bad thing after all. The problem arise when people start taking doses higher than the standard supplements in the market. One gram or one thousand milligrams is already questionable for some nutritionist, what more for those taking more than three grams a day?

Inauspiciously, contrary to popular belief, taking more than 200 milligrams a day is a near wastage as our body can only absorb this amount one at time. Megadosage is said to be a wastage and can lead to more troubles in the future. Megadosage is often used by people with degenerative diseases in the hopes of fast recovery, if not finding cure. Even Linus Pauling himself took a gram a day and said to be the cause of his long life, ending in 93 years old. Ironically though, he himself died of prostate cancer.

Expecting some effects from vitamins is not a bad thing. They are proven to be potent fighter of illnesses. Just do not exceed scientific limits as you may find yourself wasting money on things that should not have been paid for in the first place.
